Cast Iron Cookware - Great for Cold Foods Too !
August 4, 2008 on 2:04 pm | In How To's and Helpful Tips, Outdoor Cooking |Not only is your Range Kleen cast iron one of the best cooking utensils for even heat and maintaining food warmth from oven/stove top to the tabletop, it is also a great picnic vessel for cold items as well. The same way it holds the heat - it helps in maintaining the coolness of the food - which is great when serving in summer heat. There are many ways to use the vessel in cold applications. You can refrigerate the cast iron pan empty overnight in preparation for your cold picnic food. Prepare the food and then remove the cast iron from the refrigerator and fill. You can prepare the food in the cast iron and refrigerate all together. When you remove the food from the refrigerator in the cast iron pan, the food will maintain the cold temperature much longer than plastic picnic bowls and other storage devices. Don’t have time to refrigerate? Simply fill the cast iron pan with ice and water and let it sit up to 15 to 20 minutes. Once it has pan has chilled, empty out the water and ice, dry with a clean towel and add your favorite cold picnic food. Transport to the picnic table and enjoy your refreshingly chilled foods longer than using other transporting and storage containers. Plus, with the added bonus of the weight of the cast iron - you don’t have to worry about it blowing away on windy summer days. Cast Iron . . . a great summertime helper.
